Academic Coaching Vs Tutoring
The main difference between academic coaching and tutoring is that the main objective of coaching is to build executive function skills which can help a student with a variety of subjects and are also essential life skills. The habits that the student will learn through executive function skills will transform them into better learners that will help them succeed in school and in their future. Tutoring usually focuses on helping a student with a specific subject they may be struggling with such as math. Although tutors can help with homework or preparing for a test, they usually do not instill time-management and organization skills into the student which are needed for long term success, but rather they help them learn information about a specific subject.

What Makes Us Different
We put our relationship with you and your child first and back it up with high-quality, research-supported approaches. We lead with authenticity and work hard to relate to your child on their level. Our approach to coaching is fully individualized because your child is unique. The three most common evidence-based methods we include are Executive function skills training which is a library of tools and strategies that specifically isolates and strengthens each tool, Motivational interviewing to help through the stages of change, and Cognitive Behavioral Coaching.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or 'coaching' when used in this capacity, helps people broaden their thinking and learn new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions. Students develop a tool-kit of skills to overcome internal obstacles to academic success.
Motivational Interviewing is especially effective when working with students because it is a collaborative process that empowers them to take change into their own hands and replace ineffective habits with more helpful ones. The approach is especially helpful for clients who are resistant or doubtful about changing their behavior.
Executive function skills are the foundation of adulting in everyday life. We train these skills directly using a wide variety of tools and strategies and apply them to academics to increase performance. Students with good executive functioning experience higher productivity and reduced overwhelm.

It is not uncommon to resist help. Overcoming barriers to coaching is a normal part of the process and should not deter parents from getting professional help. We are skilled at working through these kinds of barriers and, while you should expect the process to take more time, it is likely that your child will benefit from academic coaching.
The process of change takes time and consistent support is critical for success. We recommend once/week sessions until your child is able to apply executive function skills on their own. Sessions can gradually reduce in frequency when our goal shifts to maintaining progress.
The extent of parent involvement depends on the age of your child and the nature of their struggles. We try to offer a reasonable amount of confidentiality so that your child feels comfortable to be honest and open throughout the process. Some clients benefit from sessions with frequent parent inclusion, while others do better when coaching is their own private space. We always inform parents of safety issues and will involve parents in coahing to the extent necessary for achieving our goals.
