Does My Child Need A Youth Life Coach?
There are many reasons why your teen might benefit from working with a life coach. We specialize in helping young people who are trying to figure out what they want in life. It's a complicated and confusing time but your child doesn't have to figure it out on their own. We strive to provide a non-judgmental space where your teen can explore their core beliefs, passions, goals and learn healthy ways of dealing with the obstacles of adolescence. Does My Teenager Need Life Coaching or Therapy?
It is not uncommon to be confused as to whether your teen needs counseling or life coaching and you may find yourself thinking they need a combination of both. However, there is a difference.
The objective of life coaching is to overcome any obstacles that may be hindering your teen from achieving personal or professional goals. Those obstacles may be external (lack of resources or education) or internal (motivation, self-confidence, executive function skills). Those who engage in life coaching must be fully functioning from a mental health standpoint or working with a separate therapist simultaneously. Occasionally, sessions may appear similar to counseling because we use the same evidence-based models from psychology but for a different purpose. In coaching, we are not restoring mental health, but rather we are 'leveling up'. Life Coaching is suitable for teenagers who may be feeling lost and confused and want to gain motivation to help them achieve their goals.
The main objective of counseling is to restore mental and/or emotional health and relationships, both with others and/or with themselves. The teenagers mental health issues often impact their ability to fully function on a daily basis and they may be struggling with a mental health condition that is undiagnosed or ongoing. The goal of counseling is to help the client through this period of time, teach skills to restore wellbeing and work toward recovery. Some signs that your teen may need counseling include changes in mood or energy levels, isolation from family and friends, feelings of overwhelm and hopelessness and excessive worrying.

Through life coaching, your teenager will learn the necessary skills needed to help them achieve their personal goals. When your teenager works with us, they will have the opportunity to explore their challenges and learn ways of overcoming them. What Makes Us Different
We put our relationship with you and your child first and back it up with high-quality, research-supported approaches. We lead with authenticity and work hard to relate to your child on their level. Our approach to treatment is fully individualized because your child is unique. The three most common evidence-based methods we include are Solution-Focused Coaching which is very action orientated and discusses accountability and skills training, Motivational interviewing to help your teen with the stages of change, and Cognitive Behavioral Coaching.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or 'coaching' when used in this capacity, helps people broaden their thinking and learn new ways of responding to difficult thoughts and emotions. Your teen will develop a tool-kit of skills that help them overcome internal obstacles to personal success.
Motivational Interviewing is especially effective when working with teenagers because it is a collaborative process that helps the person explore their own decision-making and increase their own motivation to change. The approach is especially helpful for clients who are resistant or doubtful about changing their behavior.
Solution Focused Therapy or 'coaching' when used in this capacity, helps teenagers take consistent, committed action while very practically addressing any challenges that arise along the way.
Frequently asked questions
It is not uncommon for teens to resist outside support. Overcoming barriers to coaching is a normal part of the process and should not deter parents from getting professional help. We are skilled at working through these kinds of barriers and, while you should expect the process to take more time, it is likely that your child will benefit from life coaching.
The process of change takes time and consistent support is critical for success. We recommend once/week sessions until your teen is achieving their goals. Sessions can gradually reduce in frequency when our goal shifts to maintaining progress.
The extent of parent involvement depends on the age of your child and the nature of their goals. We try to offer a reasonable amount of confidentiality so that your teen feels comfortable to be open and honest. Some clients benefit from life coaching sessions with frequent parent inclusion, while others do better when coaching is their own private space. We always inform parents of safety issues and will involve parents in counseling to the extent necessary for achieving our goals.
Not typically. Unfortunately, most insurance providers do not cover coaching services of any kind. Check with your insurance company directly to be sure.
